Nagame
About This Spot
Stepping into Nagame, tucked just off the stretch of freeway in Merced, you’re greeted by a quiet warmth that immediately invites you to slow down. This isn’t a place for rushing meals or loud crowds; it’s where you’ll find a gentle, unpretentious rhythm that feels almost like sharing a meal in someone’s home. The soft hum of conversation blends with the subtle clatter of dishes, creating an intimate atmosphere where the focus is as much on comfort as it is on the food.
There’s a humble charm here, a sense of discovery that locals have quietly cherished over time. Nagame’s dining room embraces a modest simplicity, yet each visit reveals layers of authenticity through thoughtful touches and a genuine connection to Japanese home-style cooking. The pace is easy, allowing you to savor moments over bowls of steaming broth or plates where teriyaki carries a distinct personality, not quite what you’d find elsewhere but warmly familiar all the same.
The menu echoes this spirit, favoring hearty, fresh flavors that don’t rush to impress but instead settle quietly into your memory. Whether it’s the sukiyaki with its rich, comforting broth or the sesame chicken that carries that perfect balance of crisp and savory, each dish tells a story of subtle care. Pairing the meal with a cold sake or one of the thoughtfully selected rice beers adds an additional layer to the experience, enhancing the relaxed, unhurried feel of the evening.
What truly sets Nagame apart is its welcoming mood. You might find the service flowing with a gentle familiarity that echoes neighborhood camaraderie — friendly but unforced, like catching up with an old friend over dinner. Even as regulars come and go, drawn back by the flavors and atmosphere, there’s a quiet acknowledgment of the moments shared here: a place that quietly anchors not just meals, but memories.

This place is a little gem, hidden in merced. Great authentic orginal Japanese food. Once again me and my wife stopped here now that we no longer live in town. Food was just as great as I remember. My advice is try the sukiyaki. Its the best. The temoura and teryarki have there own style and are not the traditional kind. If you thinking about it do yourself a favor this is the best place in merces to get food. It might look run down. But make no mistake, it is open for lunch and dinner. Please stop by. Not to mention prices are more than reasonable. Only spend $35 for two.

This place is really good, the food is fresh, the taste is so original, and most of the time the service is really comfortable and familiar. But at my last visit our waitress was a little distracted. So hope it gets better

You can miss it since it's on the side of the freeway. Worth the stoo for out of towners. The locals have known about this hidden gem for awhile now.

This place is a hidden gem of Merced. No sushi, but delicious Japanese food. I love the small dishes that come with the plates. Pictured are the sesame and teriyaki chicken lunch specials, an order of edamame, and some green tea. Excellent value!

We stopped by this restaurant on our way home from Yosemite to the Bay Area. I loved the atmosphere, which reminded me a classic and antique Japanese restaurant. We ordered beef and vegetable sukiyakis with gyoza appetizer and katsudon. Everything was delicious and the waitress was very nice. I would love to visit again.

What a GEM! I’m in town for work and was craving Japanese food, so glad I found Nagame! The food is super authentic and incredibly fresh. I got the Tonkatsu and Tuna Sashimi, and both were absolutely delicious. I found they’ve been serving the community for 41 Years, but sadly, they’re closing next month as the owners are retiring. I’ll definitely be stopping by again before I leave town. If you haven’t tried this place yet, now’s the time. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy a truly special spot before they close!

A hidden gem, literally! The food is delicious and the place is spotless clean. Love it! No sushi or ramen, but the teriyaki chicken will do. The green tea is very unique and a must try. We also really liked the green tea ice cream.
